Seasonal variations in the levels of antioxidant enzymes in mytilus edulis.

چکیده
Bivalves such as molluscs are widely distributed tolerant of a wide range of environmental conditions (Livingstone, 1989). Mussels are filter feeders capable of filtering large volumes of water up to several litres per hour (Bayne, 1976). In this way they concentrate many chemicals and other deleterious compounds in their tissues. The gill is the initial site of uptake of such chemicals followed by the digestive gland where these compounds are accumulated.

Integrated use of biomarkers (superoxide dismutase, catalase and lipid peroxidation) in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis for assessing heavy metals' pollution in coastal areas from the Saronikos Gulf of Greece.
Mussels are used as sentinel organisms and bioindicators to evaluate the toxic effects of chemical pollutants in marine organisms, especially heavy metals, representing an important tool for biomonitoring environmental pollution in coastal areas. Antioxidant defence enzymes play an important role in cellular antioxidant defence systems and protect from oxidative damage by reactive oxygen specie...
متن کاملSeasonal variation in the relative utilization of carbon and nitrogen by the mussel Mytilus edulis:
Elemental balances for carbon and nitrogen in an open-shore population of the bivalve mollusc Mytilus edulis underwent seasonal changes more characteristic of time-averaged than immediate optimization, Budgets emphasized the significance of shell and byssus towards both the carbon (8 and 44 %, respectively) and nitrogen (8 and 21 %, respectively) within total production, and indicated that betw...
متن کاملAssessment of seasonal variability of cytochemical responses to contaminant exposure in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis (complex).
A selected suite of cytochemical parameters in Mytilus edulis are altered in response to field and laboratory exposure to chemical contaminants. These biomarkers include lysosomal stability, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-ferrihemoprotein reductase activity, liposfuscin deposition, and accumulation of lysosomal and cytoplasmic unsaturated neutral lipid. Normal variations in...
متن کاملSeasonal changes in some physiological and biochemical responses of six groundcover plants
Landscape groundcover plants are a diverse group of trailing or spreading species that naturally form continuous soil coverage.Ground cover plants that were used in this study consisted of vegetative propagules of: Vinca minor L. ٬Variegatum’, Vinca minor L. ٬Green’, Oxalis brasiliensis G. Lodd, Trifolium repens L., Phyla nodiflora L. and Frankenia thymifolia Desf. The aim of this study was to ...
متن کاملSeasonal influence of wave action on thread production in Mytilus edulis.
The blue mussel Mytilus edulis maintains a strong attachment to the substrate in high energy environments by producing byssal threads. On the shores of Rhode Island, USA, mussel attachment strength increases twofold in spring compared to that in the fall. While many factors could influence attachment strength (temperature, food supply, predator cues, etc.), it has been proposed that the variati...
